In Gomel the Results of One-year Project were Summed-up
Trainings for bus and trolleybus drivers, action “Parking”, monitoring of social significant facilities, working meetings and seminars: in Gomel regional NGO “Invalidy-Spinalniki” the results of a one-year project were summed up. The project is one of the 18 CSOs projects in the sphere of organizational development. The projects became the winners of the New Eurasia Establishment Call and were supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
More than 50 bus and trolleybus drivers from Gomel participated in master-classes on helping people with disabilities in landing and uploading. Each driver was taught to use special equipment – a bus ramp. “Many drivers are afraid to use it even if a vehicle is equipped with it, and we work on this issue”, — said Gennadij Zolotarev, chairperson of the NGO “Invalidy-spinalniki”. Fleet management and local authorities made arrangements on including such trainings in working plans at transport institutions. Also such educational events are included in republican and regional programs on creation of a barrier-free environment in 2016-2020.

Members of “Invalidy-spinalniki” together with road policing unit of Gomel regional committee, local authorities and media organized in Gomel action “Parking”. It was a beginning of a big joint initiative of CSOs and local authorities on creating an understanding that a special place on a parking lot for people with disabilities it is not a privilege, but a necessity. The action was organized on the parking lots near big shops and administration buildings. NGO members handed out the instruction booklets, staff of the road policing unit organized preventive instructions, gave a ticket to those, who left their cars in inappropriate places. NGO members checked if all the direction signs were marked correctly and people using wheelchair were able to reach the buildings situated near the parking lot. Similar actions were organized in Mozyr, Rechica, Svetlogorsk, Zhlobin.
Also the monitoring of objects of barrier-free environment was organized. Active NGO members and volunteers prepared resolutions for 99 objects. “Is it not always possible to install a wheelchair ramp. We worked with design organizations and made other arrangements, for example for the blind and starblind” – said Gennadij. During the project 65 consultations on barrier-free environment issues were organized.
Educational seminars for NGO members and volunteers as well as local authorities, design organizations and other interested parties were organized within the project. Two working meetings with students of Belarusian State Transport University and Gomel State Medical University confirmed the importance of working with youth.
“The project gave an impetus to solving problems of a barrier-free environment, took our organization to a next level of organizational development, enhanced potential and professionalism in solving our main issues. We also built partnerships with state structures in solving problems of people with disabilities and their adaptation” – summed up Gennadij Zolotarev.
